The community of Redford Township, Michigan, is grieving the heartbreaking loss of James Dylan Burkett, known to his family and friends as Dylan, who tragically passed away just two days after his 15th birthday. Dylan’s sudden death has left his family, friends, and neighbors struggling to comprehend the loss of a young life full of promise, energy, and love.
According to authorities, the fatal incident occurred at the intersection of 6 Mile Road and Kinloch Street when Dylan, who was riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), was rear-ended while stopped on the road. Michigan state law prohibits driving an ATV on streets and highways without adult supervision, and Dylan was not under such supervision at the time of the crash. Emergency responders arrived on the scene, but tragically, Dylan did not survive.
Dylan’s father, James Burkett, shared his grief and heartbreak, recalling the moments leading up to the accident. Just before Dylan left for his final ride, the two had a conversation about wearing a helmet. “I got on him real big and bad cause I make him wear his helmet and he doesn’t like to wear his helmet because he always has his headphones on and he can’t wear his headphones with the helmet,” Burkett said. A few minutes later, Dylan left, and about 30 minutes afterward, the crash occurred. Burkett described the devastation of finding his son, recounting the moment he screamed, “Where’s my son? Where’s my son?” before realizing he had lost him.

His father fondly described him as a “rough-and-tumble kid” from south Georgia who loved fishing, riding ATVs, and caring deeply for his family. He helped care for his dying grandfather and was devoted to his girlfriend, whose love and affection he cherished. “She would write him a note. He’d come home all happy and show my wife, ‘Look what she wrote me… she really loves me,’” Burkett recalled, tears streaming.
At just 15, Dylan’s life was brimming with energy, joy, and love for those around him. His father now urges other parents to remain vigilant and protective of their children, emphasizing how quickly life can change. “I love him, man. I’ll always love him. And this ain’t real… I feel like I’m gonna wake up in that chair any minute, and he’s gonna be right there,” Burkett said.
